Classic Sungka Board

Crafted from a single, solid block of dense mango wood, the traditional Filipino sungka board is a masterpiece of functional folk art, brought to life by the legendary woodworking hands of Kapampangan artisans. Famous for their masterful craftsmanship, these Kapampangan woodcarvers shape the durable, warm-toned timber into an elegant, elongated form that mirrors the sleek lines of a narrow boat.

The heart of the board features a precise topography of hollowed-out pits sculpted directly into the wood. Running down the center of the vessel are fourteen small, circular pockets neatly divided into two parallel rows of seven. This symmetrical layout is anchored at each far tip of the boat by two significantly larger master pits, creating a beautiful visual balance from end to end. Because mango wood holds detail so exceptionally well, the Kapampangan artisans frequently adorn the exterior flanks and base of the board with rich, intricate patterns or carvings of mythical sea creatures, transforming the entire gaming canvas into a striking sculptural statement.
